Snippet:
Game fans are also troubled by the injection of money into an equation that they are used to seeing depend largely on skill, particularly in competitive arenas. This is not a new debate — we have seen it in everything from sleeker swimsuit fabrics for competitive swimmers, to horse breeders with dough getting access to the right bloodlines, to salaries for Major League Baseball teams. It is not a new debate, and it happened just as much with the other business models as well, albeit in a more underground fashion.

People get creeped out by the science behind marketing. It’s a lot more pervasive than people think, and an educated consume should definitely learn about it all and learn to recognize it. But there’s nothing happening here that isn’t already happening at your local market. If anything, expect that over time the science will be applied more and more to games regardless of business model. Social-game-style metrics are increasingly in use in console games, for example.

In the end, my message is this:

Free to play is not evil, it’s just different. If you’re freaked out by seeing business practices nakedly, realize that what’s changed is that you can see them. And to my mind, that’s actually better for you than blissful ignorance.

BULLSHIT, and it's sad to hear from this guy.

"People get creeped out by the science behind marketing."

Yeah, and they SHOULD be creeped out. The principles behind marketing are despicable. It is no great exaggeration to call it psychological warfare.

He doesn't say he likes it, just that it is the way it is.

He can't change it.

"Free to play is not evil, it’s just different."

He is defending it. It IS evil.

You don't change it by becoming part of it. You fight it by offering an alternative.

Maximizing profits is an excuse for many sorts of evil in the world.

Come on. Saying it is evil is just grandstanding and exaggeration. They're not crushing puppies, they're just not giving you the game you want in the way you want.

I hate nuts, but I don't claim Mr. Peanut is evil.

There are degrees of evil.

Deliberately misleading and manipulating your customers is evil.

The very term "free to play" is a deception.

Raph is right, Free to Play is not evil. Just like any computer code is not good or evil. It all comes down to how companies/programmers use the code or in this case, f2p mechanics.

There are some good implementations of f2p out there. If done right they can be very fair and beneficial for a game. That however is the diving line.

To many companies get caught up staring at the mountains of endless gold they think f2p brings to their games or switch to f2p as a final desperation move. There are enough poor examples in the genre that they set a very negative image for f2p.

Personally I think almost every mmo that tries f2p is doomed, because the games are designed in such a way that it forces companies to resort to selling power to players. There just isn't enough social aspects in the games or long term vision to carry the games forward without running out of "fun" items to keep the game funded. Selling power to players is easy and usually met with initial success, but I think it is a case of selling the future for a few dollars today.

I just don't think the genre as a whole has figured out how to do f2p from start to finish.

Great post daffid!

But I think you're misreading what Raph was implying just a bit with this.

People get creeped out by the science behind marketing. It’s a lot more pervasive than people think, and an educated consume should definitely learn about it all and learn to recognize it. But there’s nothing happening here that isn’t already happening at your local market.

I read that as "They ARE already selling Pay2Win" (or whatever you wanna call it), they just disguise it as things like "expansions" these days. What new content do you buy now that doesn't offer better loot or more levels? The P2Win is already in games, just disguised around "MOAR CONTENT!".

I COMPLETELY disagree with him in that "it's not evil" though...it IS! It cheats the customer out of TRUE content for their $ and inspires little more than laziness from developers. It's nothing but a way to make a quick buck with LESS work.

I liken it to Hershey's reducing the size of their candy bar by 30% and claiming on the wrapper that it's now 15% larger because 30% smaller is the new 'normal'. Look at "Fun Size" candy bars or King Size - they used to be much bigger.

I love Raph and believe in 95% of what he says...but F2P IS evil to the consumer IMO.

But again, how is it evil?

Different cashflow, yes. But it isn't misleading you, it isn't shaking you down. It is just a different way to monetize what you want to do.

Because in F2P, how are you a "customer" that is cheated when you only pay for what you want? You're not paying a sub fee, and you get what everyone else gets for free. You're not forced to pay for anything that you don't want.

Now I agree, some MMOs have screwed their customers for switching to F2P, especially DCUO and Trek for screwing all their lifetime subs (in my opinion they should have refunded at least half the money back). But other than that, their "customers" now don't pay a monthly fee.

So everything they buy is optional.

AND if they decide not to buy more than 15 a month in stuff, they come out ahead.

Is F2P a model I like? Well, I don't know. I am happy the kids can play CoH without a fee, and I am interested in Trek now that it is free. Not sure how that will play out.

But to claim it is evil, just plain denigrates the word Evil.
